What Kind of Material is Used to Create Shape-Cut Stickers?

This versatility allows you to order kiss-cut stickers for a variety of purposes. For instance, you can order an A5-sized, low-cost shape-cut sticker sheet made of plain paper in bulk for giveaways or gifts.
Alternatively, suppose you need premium vinyl stickers shaped like cartoon characters or company logos for application on a mobile phone or laptop. In that case, you can first print your design on high-quality vinyl rolls and then have it kiss-cut according to your artwork.

How Are Kiss-Cut Stickers Manufactured?
What’s so unique about the kiss-cutting process? You might wonder.
Well, the problem is that a run-of-the-mill print shop will simply supply stickers in either a square or rectangular shape. This is easy to achieve because all the print shop employees need to do is push the large sticker sheets into a guillotine cutting machine, which cuts only along straight lines.
But certain print shops (like Orchid Digitals 🙂 go the extra mile. We employ specialised kiss cutting machines in our workshop, which can programme the blade to run in any non-linear shape desired. The end result is that you can commission a decal in any shape you wish.
Let’s see how we achieve this.
Our kiss-cutting machines are built on the lines of a cutting plotter. They come with a very sharp blade. This blade glides along the top surface of a sticker sheet, cutting along the edge of the label as it moves. And the best thing is you can program the blade to move in any direction you want.
For instance, you can create a circle, triangle, pentagon, or any other non-linear polygon shape. The cutting blade will trace along the defined edges and produce a kiss-cut sticker in that specific shape.
But Why Use the Word ‘Kiss-cut’? The meaning of half-cutting a sticker sheet.
As you all know, every sticker consists of two layers.
- The actual sticker media that is printed upon and has an adhesive backing.
- And, the release liner beneath. This is the sheet at the base, on which the sticker sheet rests and from which the printed label is peeled off by the user.
So, when a shape-cut job is being processed, what is happening is that the sharp point of the blade is essentially ‘kissing’ the top surface of the sticker material without touching (or cutting) the release paper beneath.
And as it glides over the surface, the blade slits or half-cuts the material to make it easy for the end-user to peel the sticker off, from the liner beneath.
In the printing industry, we call this technique half-cutting a sticker sheet. The customer receives a completed job that consists of a large sheet of paper featuring multiple smaller sticker labels arranged on it. Although the sheet is not fully cut, the individual labels are half cut around the edges, making it easy to peel them off.
On the other hand, when we refer to a through-cut or full-cut sticker, it indicates that the entire label has been separated, including the sticker on top and the release sheet below. While the cutting process is straightforward, lifting a small through-cut label can pose a challenge. To do this, you will need to slide your nail under a corner of the sticker that is firmly stuck to the release sheet below.
In contrast, a half-cut sticker sheet features a fully intact release paper beneath, which acts as a lever, allowing for easier lifting of the stickers from the release sheet.
Kiss cutting decals for short-order jobs
Historically, shape-cut stickers could only be processed through die cutting. This method required a sharp-edged metallic die that was pressed with force onto the sticker sheet to cut along the contours. (Much like you press a mould on dough to make a star-shaped cookie.)
The die takes days for fabrication. Its cost is also significant. So the die-cutting process for sticker printing jobs is impractical and uneconomical for smaller print runs.
Digitally printed sticker sheets combined with programmable kiss-cutting machines address both of these issues, allowing you to order even small quantities of stickers in any shape you desire.

Different Finishing Options Available After Sticker Printing Is Done
As seen above, stickers get printed on plastic, paper, metal foils, reflective and even night glow media. But in addition to the print, Orchid Digitals also provides quite a few finishing options for your sticker printing job.
For example, you can give a metallic sticker, a gloss, a matt, or even a glitter finish. Alternatively, a client may ask for his prints to be laminated for durability.
So, here is a list of the frequently requested finishing options that you may want to consider for your sticker printing job.
Half-Cutting of Sticker Paper
Half cutting is a process that enables easy peeling of labels, from the underlying release paper.
This process slits the upper layer of the sticker (that bears the print on top and adhesive beneath). The release paper (the lower layer of the sticker), is not cut through, but kept intact. So when you bend the sticker sheet slightly, one corner of the label pops up and makes peeling of the stickers extremely easy.
Stickers are generally printed in multiples on large sheets of size 12 * 18 inches or bigger. Therefore, half-cutting the stickers makes sense as trying to separate the label from the release liner can otherwise be quite aggravating.
Lamination
Some premium products need labels that do not get easily scuffed or scratched. In these scenarios, we laminate the stickers with an additional layer of transparent film.
In addition to increasing the durability of the print, laminating films are also used to give a high-gloss or a silky matt finish to the stickers.
Variable Data Printing
In some situations, the content of each individual sticker may vary.
For example, A job may call for individual address labels to bear the different addresses of the recipients. Alternatively, there might be a case where each sticker might contain different numbers from a sequence.
What we do at Orchid is pull this variable data from a database, place it in a predefined format and print out labels containing different information. This enables us to print stickers having a similar template and layout but different (or variable) information.

No. We do not have an in-house designer. And do not provide designing services to our customers.
The artwork for the job generally comes in from the client’s end. We simply take the ready file and process the same on our machines.

No. We do not print stickers individually. The same are generated in bulk from larger sheets or huge rolls of material.
Hence there is MOQ (minimum order quantity) / minimum billing amount, set in place for this product.
We process a minimum of 50 large (A3 sized) sheets of any one media. Depending upon your choice of material (paper, plastic, metallic, transparent, etc.), the billing amount an be work out to anywhere between 3000 – 4000 rupees.
Yes you can print different graphics and pictures in the same job. As long as the media remains the same, we have no problem in processing this order.

How Much Does Sticker Printing Cost?
As described above, decals could be printed on a single sheet or a huge roll of vinyl. Print houses generally stock sticker sheets in size 12 inches by 18 inches (A3 extra). So the price quoted in the table below is on a per sheet basis having size 12 X 18 inches.
On the other hand, stickers are also generated from huge rolls of vinyl. These printable rolls of plastic have a form factor similar to the huge bales of cloth we see in garment stores. How to Determine the Cost per Sticker of Your Specific Design?
As mentioned above, sticker prices are generally quoted per area of the material, either as a square foot or as a sheet of size 12*18 inches. But both these areas are most probably larger than your small sized sticker.

Further, we need 180 individual stickers.
4 times 3 is 12 on the horizontal axis and 2 times 6 is 12 on the vertical axis. So we can fit 3 columns and 6 rows of our 4*2 size in one square foot. One square foot of sticker material will give us 18 individual labels. And for 180 vehicle decals we need to budget for 10 square feet of the said sticker material.

How to Determine the Cost per Sticker of Your Specific Design?
As mentioned above, sticker prices are generally quoted per area of the material, either as a square foot or as a sheet of size 12*18 inches. But both these areas are most probably larger than your small sized sticker.
So how do you figure out the per piece cost of your individual label?
